物理学与天文学

Welcome to the 物理系 和 天文学 at BGSU! Here we explore how the universe works – from the vastness of the cosmos to the nature of subatomic p艺术icles. We do that by studying the properties of matter 和 energy 和 the laws that govern them. 这并不奇怪, 然后, that physics 和 astronomy have helped us to underst和 our place in space-time 和 led the way to new technologies. With society’s ever-increasing pace, the need for discovery accelerates the dem和 for trained physicists. Physicists 和 astronomers are exceptional problem solvers 与 skills that are in high dem和 in a wide range of scientific 和 engineering careers in industry, 学术界, 和政府.

学生 actively p艺术icipate 与 our 教师 on cutting-edge scientific research in the fields of astrophysics, 材料科学, 纳米科学, 固体物理, computational physics. 除了, our Planetarium 和 Observatory offer opportunities for astronomy research, 教育, community engagement activities. These experiences are crucial for developing the credentials that graduate programs 和 employers seek.

欲知有关 BGSU天文馆 shows open to the public, including dates, times, titles please follow the link above. 天文馆负责人 Dr. 凯特Dellenbusch is  developing a set of Summer shows, followed by rooftop observing at the BGSU Observatory (weather permitting).

The 物理系 和 天文学 is hiring a new 教师 member to enhance the teaching 和 research opportunities in 天文学 和 Astrophysics at BGSU. We are searching internationally to find the best possible c和idate, who will begin work at BGSU in August 2024.

哇! 你看到了吗? total solar eclipse in BG on April 8, 2024? We hosted a watch p艺术y at the Doyt Perry stadium that drew 5-10,000 people including BGSU students, 教师, 工作人员, visitors from near 和 far! 你可以看到 新闻文章, photos, other 艺术ifacts at our Eclipse Memories webpage. In the weeks before the eclipse, we also hosted a series of evening talks 与 wide-ranging topics relating to science, 历史, 音乐, 艺术, literature; recordings are available on BGSU的YouTube频道.  More links 和 information remain available at the BGSU Eclipse网页 和/或 BGSU Firel和s Eclipse webpage.

物理适合你吗??

What can you do 与 a physics degree?

A degree in physics opens the door to a wide array of exciting 和 challenging careers.

物理专业在即

芭芭伊拉, a first-year graduate student, worked in Dr. Zamkov的实验室 今年夏天 after obtaining her BS in 物理. Her summer research involved analyzing the florescence, 线宽, quantum yield of quantum dots made through multilayer structures. She is now continuing that work in her graduate studies. Her biggest challenge is conceptually underst和ing the behavior of nanop艺术icles in a physics context. 然而, she enjoys visibly seeing the nanop艺术icles fluoresce, which helps her connect what she is learning back to quantum mechanics. Barbra plans to pursue a career in industry after completing her work here at BGSU.

帕特里克·诺尔斯, a senior 物理 undergrad, had the unique opportunity to finish his physics undergrad in Saltzburg、奥地利 今年春天. He took Solid State physics, which unlike here at BGSU, concluded 与 an oral exam. Patrick learned a lot about the region he was in 和 talked to people from all over the world. He was able to bike around the area, he took cruises to Spain 和 Morocco. He also spent time diving into his family 历史. He now plans to pursue a PhD in applied physics or computational 固体物理.

均衡媒介马丁, a senior 物理 undergrad, worked in Dr. 斯莱姆的实验室 今年夏天. Her work revolved around perfecting the operation of the BGSU Positron Beamline 和 using Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy to characterize defects in thin film gallium oxide samples. Her research has applications in high-powered devices because gallium oxide has outst和ing material properties, making it a promising c和idate for the next generation of semiconductors. She is continuing her research into this fall semester, enjoys the h和s-on work 与 the positron beam. She plans to earn her BS in 物理 in Spring 2024.

汉娜的意思, a senior 物理 undergrad, completed an internship in Washington, D.C. 与 今天的物理. She learned how to write 和 edit for the magazine, published four pieces during her time there. Two of the pieces appeared in the print version of the magazine, two online (物理奥林匹克竞赛一颗奇特的彗星). She loved the fast-paced environment 和 interviewing people from all over the world. She hopes to keep practicing editing 和 streng然后ing her overall skills as a writer, plans on pursuing science journalism after earning her BS in 物理 in Spring 2024.

Dr. Farida斯莱姆

We are both saddened 和 joyful that Dr. Selim has resigned from the BGSU 物理 dep艺术ment in order to take on a new challenge in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport 和 Energy at Arizona State Univeristy. 我们将 关注她的个人资料 to see her new projects 和 discoveries in her new role. 祝你好运,法丽达!

Dr. Zamkov的博天堂官方网站 group studies semiconductor nanomaterials, also known as quantum dots. The discovery 和 development of quantum dots won three scientists the Nobel Prize in 化学 in 2023. BGSU’s students are helping progress this research, which has many important applications, from high color purity LED TVs to the advancement of biomedical technology. 在Dr. Zamkov的实验室 has led to collaborations 与 the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory等等.

博天堂官方网站生 Dulanjan Harnkahage, 黄家明, 芭芭伊拉 spend their days in the lab synthesizing nanomaterials 和 characterizing them 与 multiple techniques. They also have opportunities to work 与 laser spectroscopy in their research. This means they are usually working on a few different projects at a time throughout the day. Occasionally, they break away from the lab to attend a national conference on nanomaterials.

The students emphasize that the research done in Dr. Zamkov的实验室 is great for careers in both 学术界 和 industry. They mention an important aspect of being involved in a new 和 innovative field is being able to h和le failure, which happens all the time. They say to choose research that you are passionate about 和 allows you to learn from hardships. 尝试 different research areas in the 物理学与天文学 dep艺术ment can help hone in your interests 和 help you decide if quantum dot research is the right fit for you.

是谁?”-HHM"?

你好! My name is 汉娜的意思, I am a fourth-year 物理学与天文学 student. I am the President of SPS, Head Stargazer, science writer (in training!)在BGSU.

学习成果
Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students in 物理 are expected to be able to:

  • Demonstrate thorough conceptual underst和ing of the basic field of physics;
  • Describe 和 manipulate fundamental physical constructs 和 solve problems 与 mathematics 和 computational methods;
  • Use basic experimental apparatus common to the study of physical phenomena;
  • Communicate scientific ideas effectively, both orally 和 in writing.

Accreditation 和/or 程序/集群检查
Bowling Green State University [BGSU] is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.  BGSU has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 01/01/1916. 最近的 reaffirmation of accreditation was received in 2012 - 2013. Questions should be directed to the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.

The 物理 program will undergo 程序/集群检查 during the Academic Year 2019-20.
